The journal "Our agriculture" published an article "Protected urea in cow feed", which describes the result of the use of the feed additive Menogen in farms of the Republic of Belarus.
In the published material prepared by the employees of the company Misma, it is described why protected urea is introduced into the diets of animals and the question of the economic benefits of using feed urea in the form of a Menogen supplement is disclosed.
The ability of ruminants to synthesize protein from non-protein nitrogen in the rumen served as the basis for the use of urea as a feed additive. And the low cost of urea and the high content of crude protein makes it an even more attractive source of protein for cows. But the use of unprotected urea leads to rapid absorption of excessive amounts of ammonia into the blood and can lead to severe poisoning. This problem solved by the practice of using Menogen, a feed additive of protected urea, with an extended period of ammonia release.
The article presents the experience of using protected feed urea on the farm of the Menon Сompany, the manufacturer of the Menogen feed additive. The research groups of fistula cows were placed nylon bags with the feed additive Menogen and bags with feed urea. According to the measurements of the urea release rate, it was found that the urea of the feed additive Menogen is released much slower than unprotected urea.
Complete dissolution of feed urea was recorded by the 3rd hour of being in the rumen, and Menogen-by the 12th hour.
Thus, the advantages of using Menogen compared to unprotected urea are:
- minimizing the risk of ammonia poisoning;
- taste appeal, absence of unpleasant odors;
- constant concentration of released urea in the rumen;
- complete assimilation of feed additive nitrogen;
- there is no excess nitrogen – there is no load on the liver.
The article also gives an example of the successful use of Menogen in the livestock farm of JSC "Zhuravnoye" (Belarus), thanks to which it was possible to reduce feed costs and increase milk yield by 10-12%.
